William & Mary will mark its fifty-year anniversary of the first African American students in residence with a year-long series of events beginning June, 2017, and continuing through May, 2018. As a part of the celebration, Opera in Williamsburg, Inc, was commissioned to invite outstanding African American opera singers for a gala evening on April 13, 2018. The evening, curated and accompanied by Maestro Richard Cordova, will focus on operas by African American composers, operas about the African American experience, and mainstream opera, as well as African American musical genres that influenced opera like spirituals and jazz.
